The Goo Goo Dolls: What's in a name? With the Goo Goo Dolls on the road to celebrate their 25th anniversary, it seems now's a good time for a flashback This story is adapted from a piece I wrote years ago for my college paper. The Sex Maggots are coming to Connecticut. Or at least, they would have been, had the Goo Goo Dolls not changed their name two decades ago. As legend has it, the band was forced to find a new moniker when a club owner refused to put the old name on his marquee.

About Goo Goo Dolls. Mike Malinin was the band's drummer from January until December Although renowned for their commercially successful single "Iris", they have had several other notable and popular singles including "Name" from 's A Boy Named Goo, "Broadway", "Black Balloon" and "Slide" from 's Dizzy Up The Girl, which produced a total of five successful singles, and "Here Is Gone", "Sympathy" and "Big Machine" from 's Gutterflower. The Goo Goo Dolls have had 14 top ten singles on various charts, and have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. Their biggest hit, "Iris", from the City of Angels soundtrack and later Dizzy up the Girl , spent nearly 12 straight months on the Billboard charts and held the number one position on the Hot Airplay chart for 18 weeks.
Early in their career, the Goo Goo Dolls were frequently dismissed by critics as mere imitators of the Replacements; however, they refined and mainstreamed their sound to become one of the most popular adult alternative rock bands of the s, selling millions of records to audiences largely unfamiliar with their influences. That's no knock on the band, either — the music simply improved in craft and accessibility as the years progressed, and radio happened to be receptive to a style that, one decade earlier, would have been considered collegiate power pop. Thus, the band landed two huge hits with the acoustic ballads "Name" and "Iris," followed by a string of Top Ten singles. Their early sound recalled the Replacements' origins as a bratty punk band: melodic, snotty, and a little bit thrashy. That sound was the reason the band attracted the interest of the heavy metal label Metal Blade, which issued their debut album in known either as The Goo Goo Dolls or First Release.
